At Legacy, we have successfully launched our second transition residential to help our Juniors (aged 12-13) settle into our Senior Sessions. this has been very successful and we took a group of 12-13 year olds to Butlins to help make friends, work on team work skills and most importantly have fun! You can read Asia’s story below.
Before going on the trip to Butlins with Legacy Youth Zone, I was really nervous. I struggle with focusing, and sometimes my attitude makes things harder. I also have anxiety, so I was worried about missing my mum and whether I’d be able to make friends.
Once we got there, I tried to keep an open mind. We did so many fun activities like the funfair, VR, laser tag, digital darts, high ropes, and pottery. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did, but I had so much fun! My favorite part wasn’t even the big activities—it was actually playing card games as a group. It was nice just sitting together, laughing, and feeling like I belonged.+
One of my biggest challenges was my anxiety, but I worked hard to not let it get the best of me. I also usually avoid eating from buffets, but this time, I actually tried some of the food. It felt like a big step for me. Another thing that changed was my friendships. At first, I was nervous about talking to new people, but by the end of the trip, I had built better relationships with the staff and made new friends.
During our free time, I even took on a bit of a leadership role by keeping everyone together. It felt good to take responsibility and make sure everyone was included. This trip made me realize that focusing on the positives is much better than stressing over the challenges. I had way more fun than I expected, and now I even want to take my kids to Butlins one day!
Happiness never decreases from being shared.
This experience has really helped me grow. I’ve started mentoring with Kelly, and now I’ll be attending seniors only at Legacy Youth Zone. I can’t wait for what’s next!
