Volunteering at Legacy - Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have any experience with young people, can I still apply?

Yes, you can. Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. Everyone has to start somewhere, and we’re happy to support you in your first volunteering role alongside young people.

Do you provide training for volunteers?

All our volunteers receive full training prior to their start, including online and in-person sessions. Our goal is to ensure that every volunteer is confident in their knowledge of our youth work principles, operations in the Youth Zone and their role.

How much time do I need to commit to volunteering?

There is no formal time commitment for volunteers. However, our roles have a suggested commitment period to provide consistency and build positive, trusting relationships with young people at Legacy. If you are unsure whether you can meet this suggestion, we can discuss options with you.

My child is a member at Legacy, can I still volunteer?

In many cases you can still volunteer, but situations are assessed individually. It is not our policy for parents/carers to volunteer while their children are present at the Youth Zone. Please contact our Volunteer Co‑ordinator to discuss your circumstances so we can consider the best and safest way for you to get involved.

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

Most volunteer roles are open to people aged 18 or over, with some 21+. If you are a member of the Youth Zone and aged 14–18, you may be able to get involved through our Young Leaders programme instead

Do you offer corporate volunteering opportunities?

Yes. We have opportunities specifically for businesses and corporate groups. You can find out more by contacting our Corporate Partnerships Manager, who can share our latest corporate volunteering information and opportunities.

I have a criminal record, can I still volunteer?

All volunteer positions require an enhanced DBS check. Having a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from volunteering; decisions are made based on the nature of the offence and how relevant it is to the role. If you have unspent convictions, you will be asked to provide details confidentially for review.

What if I am not enjoying my role?

You are free to step back from your volunteer role at any time. If you decide to leave, we simply ask that you give us as much notice as possible so we can minimise disruption to services for young people.

I need to volunteer as part of my education (e.g. a work placement), can I do this at Legacy?

It is possible to undertake a student placement at Legacy, however spaces are extremely limited and these need to be organised with your college or university. If you are interested in a placement, please speak to your placement tutor or contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator for more information.

Do you offer work experience?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate short-term work experience placements at Legacy Youth Zone.
